knit community williams was the celebrity living in plain sight. they were fiercely protective of his anonymity and tonight are deeply saddened by his apparent suicide. >> we love you, robin. >> reporter: in tiburon the flowers are not for the actor and comedian robin williams, but for the husband, the father and neighbor. >> i thought of his family. he was such a great guy and such a loss for the whole community. he was such an icon for everyone and an inspiration. >> he really, really tried to be not a celebrity. he tried to be just a human being. >> reporter: 911 was called to robin's home just before noon today. >> medic attempt, apparent suicide attempt by hanging. >> reporter: the 63-year-old academy award winner was pronounced dead in his home.

robin's publicist released a statement saying he'd been battling severe depression as of late. on his street he wasn't a superstar but just a neighbor walking his dog, the dad helping his kids. >> he was one of the most sincere and friendly people i've met in my life. i remember sometimes i'd be hanging out with casey and he'd always be offering to help us or make us food and he was just so sincere and honest and friendly. >> i feel really horrible for his kids especially and his family. >> reporter: robin's wife susan said this of her husband's death. "i lost my husband and my best friend. while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. i am utterly heartbroken. on behalf of robin's family we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. as he is remembered it is our hope the focus will not be on robin's debt but on the countless moments of joy -- death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he

>> that's where he says help is on the way, dear. >> reporter: the bay area was where a young robin williams got his start in comedy fresh out of juilliard. journalist and broadcaster ben vonterez profiled williams for this 1980 article for parade magazine one season into mork and mindy. he remembers his energy as boundless. >> an unstoppable talent. you couldn't control the guy. he couldn't control himself. >> reporter: even with the star rising he says williams was struggling with a dark side. >> he was already saying at age 29 that he was looking at himself 30 years from now in about 2010 being a derelict washed up drunk in a bar trying to buy a drink for an older lady by trying to remind her that he was in mork and mindy. he had a sad vision of his future even then. >> it scares me. that's a genuine fear that the fire goes out.

mork and mindy could end this year, next year. i don't know how long it can go. >> reporter: tonight we learned there was a mrs. doubtfire sequel in the works that robin williams had actually attached himself to. that movie was set to be released in 2015, but tonight we have to say the future of that movie certainly in doubt. >> christin ayers in san francisco, thank you. robin williams' final instagram post 12 days ago, this photo of himself with his daughter zelda as a baby. he tweeted quarter of a century old today but always my baby girl. happy birthday, love you. him.. less than a month ago. robin williams struggled with addiction for decades. tonight sharon chin talked to a man who was in aa with him less than a month ago. >> reporter: when he headlined at place like cobbs comedy club in san francisco north beach, we saw robin williams the dazzling entertainer, but tonight we spoke with someone who gave us a different side of

him. kpix5this news photographer worked with robin williams more than 10 years ago and ran into him over the years. dean was surprised to see the comedian at an aa meeting in mill valley about a month ago. >> he was very slow in his movements and his demeanor was also very low. he really, really needed support at this time. >> reporter: dean said he was impressed at the entertainer's willingness to reach out. >> he was one of the very first to raise his hand and open himself to vulnerability to anyone about his own personal situation. >> people like myself alcoholic. >> reporter: the comic was open about his battle with drug and alcohol addiction. his return to rehab in 2006 after being sewner 20 years, williams' -- sober 20 years, william' publicist said he was fine tuning his sobriety last month at a minnesota treatment center. he posed with this facebook

photo with a dairy queen brea and he reflected on his sobriety -- employee and he reflected on this in the last comedy. >> it's not really blackouts. it's like sleep walking with activities, but it's the idea of yeah, i'm more focused i am present. >> reporter: dean said he'll remember how williams touched his own life. >> he was wanting to help people, but he himself needed more help than he could give. >> reporter: dean said after the alcoholics anonymous meeting he gave williams his phone number for support. he only wishes he could have done more. sharon chin, kpix5. >> robin williams joked he went back to work on the crazy ones because he needed the money to pay alimony. this spring he put his 600-acre napa valley estate back on the market. he called it villa of smiles,

>> a dramatic scene from the mountains of northern iraq, dozens of trapped refugees rescued. watch as dozens of desperate refugees though themselves at the helicopter. these refugees have been surrounded on a mountain by isis militants. it's being called a human catastrophe as they face the death of starvation, dehydration and mass murder. back at home police in hollister are trying to figure out what happened to a young woman named vanessa flores. betty yu tells us vanessa's friend is dead and vanessa is probably in a lot of danger. >> reporter: rosi oo ybarra last saw the her daughter on august 1st when she left her home to help a friend move. later that night police say she ended up in a car with her ex- boyfriend, his name jose

barajas. >> a very violent aggressive man. he physically abused my daughter many times during the time of their relationship. that's why she broke up with him. >> reporter: she said he used threats to get her daughter to stay with him. police believe he kidnapped vanessa and murdered her friend the same night. police say it was at this intersection that jose shot and killed vanessa's friend sitting in another car. she was the unintended target and innocent victim. police have not said who the target was, but her family believes that man was her new boyfriend and the crime the result of jose's jealousy. the department has no solid leads as to where the two might be. >> i'm extremely worried about this. an been an exhaustive investigation thus far. it's frustrating we haven't been able to locate her and bring her home to her family. >> i'm waiting for her return. we won't give up until we find her.

>> reporter: in hollister betty yu, kpix5. >> the hollister city council will hold a special meeting tomorrow night to consider increasing the reward money for jose barajas up to $25,000. won't be going anywhe a bay area woman who has a fascination with airports and sneaking onto planes won't be going anywhere soon. a judge revoked her probation. marilyn hartman was in court in los angeles today. bail was set at $30,000. last week hartman stowed away from san jose to los angeles where she was arrested. she was ordered to stay away from l.a.x. but was rearrested the next day at the airport. she faces six months in jail. this summer is following a crazy winter and it's acting up on its own. we've got some really strange weather going on. >> we do, but i'm going to begin the weather by posing a question. what is 13 days old, 10,000 acres big and shows no sign of letting up? that lodge fire up in mendocino

county 200 acres big and we mentioned it as you looked at pictures associated with that fire because look at what we have posted back in the bay area tonight. there are fire weather alerts posted for the north bay and parts of the far east east bay until 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. it's in effect at 9:00 tonight and it's all because of low pressure that is spinning offshore. for the north bay area dry lightning threat, low humidity, high fuel, a dangerous combination and the reason why things are looking especially dicey tonight is because first of all, the weather is not chilly. we don't have the sea breeze or marine influence and look at all the thunderstorms popping over the sierra. now low pressure that has been offshore will kick inland tonight over the north bay. there is a chance, not much, but as low pressure head inland there's a chance of a lightning bolt or two. they had them up in lake tahoe today. we shall see. again this is confined to the

north bay and points farther north, but nevertheless with the season we've had it doesn't take much. out the door drizzle tomorrow morning, around the bay low 60s. inland will be mostly sunny. by tomorrow afternoon we recover back to the mid-80s inland, mid-70s around the bay, pretty typical this time of year, but again as this low pressure spins finally inland there's a slight chance of north bay thunderstorms tonight, early tomorrow morning. we're about where we should be this time of year. temperatures tomorrow the forecast highs within a few degrees of average. in the south bay we'll see san jose at 81 degrees, 77 milpitas, 87 morgan hill, 83 degrees for los altos, in the east bay about the same as today, temperatures in the mid- 80s there, mid- to upper 70s for the north bay with plenty of sun, way up north 95 at ukiah. extended forecast, usual low cloud in the morning, sun in the afternoon, drizzle along the shoreline. as we get into the weekend, plenty of sun and temperatures
